Orton-Gillingham (O-G) is a direct, explicit, multisensory, structured, sequential, diagnostic, and method of teaching literacy when reading, writing, and spelling does not come easily to individuals, such as those with dyslexia or other learning differences. Teaching sessions are action oriented with auditory, visual, and kinesthetic elements reinforcing one another. While it is most commonly used for teaching individuals with dyslexia, it is highly effective for all individuals learning to read, spell, and write. O-G is provided in one-on-one sessions by tutors or educators with prescribed credentials or experience in O-G tutoring, teaching or remedial language instruction.
Our key boarding program is multi-sensory and involves teaching each new information using several senses at once (sight, sound, touch or kinesthetic movement). This increases the likelihood that the memory of new information will be improved. Students are taught to look at the monitor, say the letters out loud and feel different key surfaces.
The program involves six one-hour lessons over six weeks. The instruction is usually on a one-to-one basis or occasionally one on two. Students are expected to practice at home for about ten minutes a day.
Our Executive Functioning Support is geared towards students who need assistance in organizing their educational direction and day to day obligations. It involves helping the planning, structuring, meeting deadlines and co-ordinating courses, programs and activities. The executive tutor acts as a coach, mentor, facilitator, intermediary, organizer and motivator. We help students with their executive functioning while teaching subject matter, organizing and scheduling skills, and generally helping and overseeing the process.
We teach students of all ages in one-on-one sessions to improve their reading by working on phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. We teach students to write creatively by working on grammar, vocabulary, spelling, sentence construction, structure, research, clarity, persuasiveness and accuracy.
We work with students with dyscalculia and those who otherwise struggle with the basics of mathematics. We reinforce basic arithmetic skills, and we teach by breaking problems into chunks, using visual aids and connecting lessons to real life situations. We have found that the technique of having students teach the lesson back to the tutor improves learning.
We work to hep students to complete homework and school assignments. Our approach is to teach the underlying concepts and skills and to provide encouragement and support. We show students how to break lengthy assignments into chunks and complete projects step by step
We teach students novel study, how to read books and other forms of literature. We teach creative writing, how to structure writing pieces and the correct use of grammar, associated rules and how to use parts of speech, and punctuation to organize thoughts and ideas.
We have staff who have degrees in engineering, IT, physics, chemistry and biology. They work with students at all levels, particularly those in senior high school years and in post secondary.
We have bilingual tutors who can tutor basic or advanced courses in French or Spanish. They can also assist French Immersion or Francophone students with regular homework support in French.
We consult with parents looking to make a choice about schools for their children and what is required to gain entry. We provide advice on what type of school would be a good choice given considering the student’s interests, ability and learning profile. We help children prepare for admission tests and what to expect at school interviews.
It has been our experience that gifted children often have issues with self-esteem, anxiety and depression associated with perfectionism, boredom at school and problems with attention and organization. We team with parents, school advisors and psychologists to provide enriched experiences that go beyond those found in a typical school environment. These experiences can include coding, digital learning or advanced reading and critical thinking.
Homeschooling is an alternative method for completing school outside the traditional. school system. We support home learners with daytime tutoring programs tailored to the individual student’s needs. We work with the parents, home schooling organization and host school to tutor and teach any and all academic subjects. Many schools and post secondary institutions have a provision for on-line learning. This approach usually provides flexible scheduling of assignments and exams. We work with students to monitor that assignments are done and submitted properly, and that the student takes examinations only when fully prepared.
We reach out to students overseas to provide a comprehensive two-day course in Risk Management in which students learn about using a structured management framework and procedures for managing corporate risk.
Our course teaches how planning, organizing, and managing resources to can be used to achieve specific project goals. Participants learn the principles and techniques of Project Management.
This course gives overseas students an understanding of how Supply Chain Management can lower costs, improve efficiency, and increase customer satisfaction.
We bring the field trip to the classroom with engaging hands-on workshops that conform to the school curriculum. Students learn about biology, chemistry, physics and engineering basics by actually performing experiments themselves in a fun and educational environment.
Our scientists conduct fun science camps for children aged 6 to 12 at community and recreational centres in the summer and at spring break to keep young minds active and stimulated when school is out.
